What is it

POCKETRY is a collective that saves unused clothing from going to waste by replenishing its value; A fashion sense with an environmental conscience.

Waste cloth is collected from every source possible and is turned into aesthetic, functional accessories like pockets to replenish value not only of the waste cloth, but also the old clothing that you put them on.

One can either purchase the pocket directly, purchase a T-shirt along with the pocket, or give their own clothing to be fitted with a pocket. We encourage people to get their own clothes to promote up-cycling and recycling.

Why

Every year an average of 22 BILLION POUNDS of fabric waste is generated all over the world, out of which only 3.8 BILLION POUNDS is recycled.

The remaining 18.2 BILLION POUNDS is left to decompose at landfills. Decomposing fabric releases methane, a significant contributor to global warming.

Motive

The idea was to create an activity to sensitize people towards fabric waste and show the vast potential of unused clothing. This was achieved through educating people about the circular economy of fabric.

It started as an awareness activity which turned into a business model with minimum capital investment, and was successfully executed by our team at a small scale.

The Stall

After cutting the shapes from the waste fabric collected, we put up a stall for people to book their favourite designs.

A total of 88 pockets were booked in a span of 4 hours. Every booking was given a token of appreciation.

Conclusion

Total fabric waste collected : 1.8 KG

Total waste reused : 0.6 KG

Total profit  : +400%

The remaining 1.2 KG was sent to the nearest fabric recycling facility. The revenue generated was invested into the transportation, labour work, and plantation of new saplings for each pocket sold.

This activity gave a positive response at a small scale and is being further developed into an extensive business model by our team.
